Mandela votes for the first time in his life in South Africa's first democratic and multi-racial election. He won the election, becoming South Africa's first black democratic president. After just one term in office, Mandela retired and gave leadership to Thabo Mbeki in He moved to a suburb of Johannesburg, where he continued his work as a freedom fighter.
Mandela continued to champion noble causes long after his presidency. And the public continued to adore him for all he did. Mandela continued to work with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, which he founded in to focus on dialogue, advocacy, memory, and legacy work, throughout his lifetime.

Songs were written and big concerts were held in protest. Mandela had spent 27 years in jail and was greeted as a hero on his release.
He is famous for promoting a message of forgiveness and equality. Apartheid was abolished a year later in , and three years after that, South Africa held its first fully-democratic elections in which black people, as well as white, were allowed to vote.
