That said, using the air con comes at a price too. The compressor at the heart of your air conditioning system requires energy in order to circulate cold air around the vehicle.
It gets the energy from the engine so when the air conditioning system is turned on you will also be using more fuel. The refrigerant, or gas, found in your air conditioning unit is critical to the air con system working properly. It is this refrigerant that flows around the system and provides the cold air in your cabin. However, as a result of this process which involves continually shifting states from gas, to liquid and back to gas again, some of this air con gas permeates through the system each year.
Less gas means less cool air so refilling every few years will keep your air con working in tip top condition. Of course there are other reasons why air con stops working but low refrigerant is the most common and, thankfully, the easiest to fix. If after a regas your air con is still blowing warm, it probably means there is a crack somewhere in the pipes of the air con system and the refrigerant is escaping.
Recharging the air con system involves removing all of the existing refrigerant and any traces of moisture from the system and replacing with fresh refrigerant. Firstly, a pressure test is carried out to find out just how much gas has been lost. If the test result shows that little or no gas remains in the system, this indicates a more serious issue such as a potential leak and the recharge is stopped. If no faults are found, the machine recovers the old refrigerant and any impurities from the air con unit using a specialist vacuum pump.
Next, fresh gas and lubricant is injected back into the air con system as per the volume and type recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. The process take about 45 minutes to completely remove the old gas and refill with fresh refrigerant. At Kwik Fit, you can have your air con recharged while you wait and take advantage of our free wifi and hot drinks.
With the new gas installed, you should be able to notice a temperature change almost immediately when the air conditioning is switched on. The new gas is flowing through the system providing cool air and lots of it.
At Kwik Fit we offer a complete air conditioning recharge service at over centres nationwide. We also offer a Recharge or No Charge guarantee should we find a leak in your air con system and the recharge cannot be completed. Our centre staff can also help to diagnose problems with your air con system should your system not hold its charge.
Book your air con recharge online. If when you turn your air con on, you are treated to a smell that can be compared to old sweaty socks, it probably means your air con could benefit from a debug service. This can produce a foul smelling odour when the air con is switched on.
Worse still, spores from this bacteria are blown into the cabin and can cause illnesses and respiratory problems in some cases. An air con debug is available as an optional extra when you have your air con recharged at KwikFit. Ask the centre manager for details when you book your air con appointment. All you need to recognize is that if you have a malfunctioning car air conditioners in the Arizona heat. An excellent first step is to examine your AC compressor. By watching how the clutch and pulleys engage , we can usually tell quickly if the problem is low refrigerant, electrical malfunction, or something mechanical.
In the case of an AC leak, bad electrical signals, or mechanical failure, the system may call for other small repairs. In many cases, though, there is a good chance that you need more of a refrigerant like Ra in your vehicle.
Some new cars that stay cool with Ra may only need to be recharged every seven years or so. In , some cars started running on RYF. Reading this I remember my car was letting off heat I could feel quite bit of heat near my feet! However I started to get bad gutt feeling on the last mechanic and picked my car up as he had charged me lots of money for little jobs already.
Could this damage my car? Question 4 months ago on Step 3. Well if you have the recharging refrigerant hooked up you ready to sueeze and get it running through there. Question 10 months ago on Introduction. Question 3 years ago on Step 1. Answer 2 years ago. Hello my friend, before you recharge AC you need to remove air from the system with a vacuum pump, because humidity in the air can freeze inside ducts and damage them.
Be careful. Reply 3 years ago. Adding Refrigerant to a vehicle does not require a draw down or evacuation of the system. However if the system has a leak and has been repaired or if it has been open at some point then yes an evacuation definitely would be required and would best be taken to an A. Reply 2 years ago. It does require to be evacuated before any repairs are made and then vacuumed down before refilling. Question 3 years ago on Step 7. I replaced my compressor.
Standard practice is vacuuming the system. Or just filling it will work. Question 2 years ago on Step 7. As an automotive technician i find this is a good write-up. However i need to make a few comments. When adding its always best to hold the can upside down since its a liquid refridgerant. Also adding refridgerant to an empty system is something that needs to be left up to the professionals as the system needs to be properly vacuumed down and kept under a vacuum until refridgerant is added.
Overcharging a system can in fact blow it up. This process can in fact be very hazardous if done improperly and there are so many factors involved with the vehicles AC that can cause a properly charged AC system to not function correctly. If you dont know much about cars id suggest leaving this process up to the professionals. I have a question. I let someone put the freon in my car day before yesterday. While he was putting in a second a loud noise came from under the hood. Looked as though spraying from the connection of the freon can and instantly it looked like clouds of smoke coming from the opposite side under the hood.
It was making this loud screeching noise. It stopped until earlier when i turned the ac on and smoke was coming from under the hood and the loud screeching until i turned it off What did he do to it??? Its severely overcharged and he blew out a gasket or compressor pressure relief valve from my guess. This was one reason for my comment. Question 2 years ago. What did he do to it. He overcharged it and blew a gasket or the pressure relief valve on the AC Compressor from the sounds of it.
This is one of the main reasons for my comment below. Tip 2 years ago on Step 2. To use a self sealing can, you also need an adapter. Screw the adapter onto the dispenser first. Then screw the can to the adapter.
Without the adapter, the can screws on but remains sealed. Both valve are the same size so I took them to auto avance and they were not able to figure out as well. Can you tell me what I need to know or how do I got by finding out without going to the dealer. Sorry if I use the word valve but I dont not know the right term. Follow the lines from the compressor. The high pressure line will go towards the coolant radiator.
The low pressure line will go to the passenger compartment. Did you make this project? Share it with us! I Made It! ClaireS 3 months ago.
